Exhibition Number 303

Abstract

Calling back an important element from my childhood memories, the piece is inspired by the Persian rug. Its form is derived from the rug loom and warp strings. As most Persian rugs are made of wool, I used wool in shades of blue and red to create the patterns, and ivory to serves as the warp of the rug. Red and blue are used frequently in Persian rug, representing different meanings, red is associated with emotion and blue brings the inner peace. The piece invites viewers to explore the piece as a whole or within its details, revealing not only the story of the rug but also the narrative behind it. The combination of clay and yarn emphasizes the contrast between the hard and soft textures, symbolizing the difficult nature of the craft while emphasizing the delicacy of the product. By transforming the rug into a three-dimensional form, I seek to breathe new life into it, bridging the gap between tradition and the modern world. This reimagining brings the essence of the rug into contemporary life, honoring its deep cultural significance while offering a fresh perspective on its role in our homes and hearts.

Importance

My childhood memories in Iran are what I draw my inspirations from in my work. The piece aims to preserve not only the memories but also the traditions and culture of my hometown. Its form and patterns are inspired by the Persian rug, which is an important piece in our homes. Rugs are more than just functional objects; they carry the story of the weaver imbedded in the patterns and the stories of the people who live with them. They witness moments of joy, play and even sorrow, becoming a patient observer of our everyday life. This piece seeks to honor that legacy, keeping the rich tradition of Persian rugs alive while bringing it into the present.

DEI Statement

My work explores my identity as an Iranian artist, reflecting on the intersection of culture, memory, and heritage. This piece is inspired by Persian rugs, which hold deep cultural meaning and memories. Through this creative endeavor, I aim to highlight the beauty of Iranian culture and the importance of preserving traditions in the face of globalization. By sharing my experience and perspective on traditions, I hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of Iranian heritage and to make people more curious about it. My work’s role is to have a social dialogue with the viewer in support of cultural diversity and awareness.
