Abstract

The graduate student string quartet will be performing a piece by PSU professor emeritus, Bruce Trinkley titled "Broken Symmetries." The piece is dedicated to Stephen Hawking and combines baroque dances and physics terms that are represented in the musical form.

Importance

The importance of this performance is the opportunity to play a piece by a former PSU faculty member, to show the possibilities of collaborating with other disciplines such as science, and to explore the repertoire in an all-women ensemble, that comes from four different cultures.

DEI Statement

Our performance presents the unification of several underrepresented groups. Firstly, the entire quartet is comprised of women, who also happen to be from four different countries: Thailand, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Korea. We are also performing a living composer's piece that is directly connected to the field of physics and science, which is not often connected and makes a wonderful pairing in the piece "Broken Symmetries."
