Abstract

I, along with my pianist Yirui Ma, will perform and present information about the first movement of Beethoven's violin sonata in a minor. During our performance, we will demonstrate the knowledge of Beethoven’s style that we’ve gained through our mutual exploration of the piece. Also, both of our professors have provided invaluable guidance towards us successfully rendering this sonata. Beethoven marks a transitional period between the classical and romantic era of music. Our research into the style has made us carefully consider every detail of the piece. We’ve had to evaluate the difference between fortepianos versus sforzandos, or what the tempo should be, or what articulation is appropriate for the style. Our goal is to deepen the understanding the audience has for Beethoven and this sonata in particular.

Importance

Since Beethoven inhabits the very short list of the most important and influential composers in classical music, it is important that those in the audience gain a deeper appreciation of Beethoven’s music. Familiarity with classic repertoire strengthens and promotes classical music in order for it to continue into the future.
