Abstract
I make art about the complexity of truly connecting with the world, with nature, with other people, and with myself. My paintings feature human likenesses, silhouettes, natural textures like plants or fossils, and pieces of technology and architecture. I often leverage recognizable imagery and media in order to draw the viewer in and ask them to stay and contemplate. The aim is to evoke a sensation of what it feels like to be alive in an era of wonders but also information overload, facing an uncertain future...
Importance
Through the content and form of my work, I aim to interface with themes like environmental degradation and social alienation, and to suggest that issues like these stem from a lack of connection -- to the natural world, to history, and to each other. Proposing new 'grand narratives' carries the danger of myopia and a totalizing energy which is probably best avoided. But at the least, I can nudge a viewer to consider what it means to be alive, here and now.
