Seeing like a butterfly: Optical invention enhances camera capabilities

Using butterfly and shrimp sight as inspiration, researchers in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science developed a metasurface, which uses tiny, antenna-like nanostructures to tailor light and encode the spectral and polarization information of a captured image. They also developed a neural network to decode the images.
