Douglas Orzolek

Biography

Douglas Orzolek joined Penn State’s Fox Graduate School as Associate Dean for Graduate Academic Affairs on January 2, 2026. He leads efforts to support graduate student success through academic advocacy, mentorship programs, and early intervention strategies, with a focus on improving retention and degree completion.

A Penn State alumnus, Orzolek earned his master’s degree in music education in 1993 and was active in campus ensembles, including directing the Pride of the Lions Pep Band. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Mansfield University and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota.

Before returning to Penn State, Orzolek spent over twenty-five years at the University of St. Thomas, where he chaired the Department of Music, Film and Creative Enterprise and directed graduate programs in music education. He advised more than 100 students completing theses and dissertations and contributed to curriculum development and interdisciplinary research.

His work in arts education has earned statewide and national recognition, including induction into the Minnesota Music Educators Association Hall of Fame and the University of St. Thomas Distinguished Educator of the Year award.
