Preparing a Three-Minute Thesis Presentation

This workshop, led by Michael Alley, teaching professor in the College of Engineering, focuses on helping graduate students prepare a 3-minute thesis (3MT) for the competition sponsored by the Fox Graduate School. In this workshop, we will analyze an outstanding 3MT talk from science and point out best practices that you could use in your own 3MT. Also discussed in the workshop will be how to present your thesis or dissertation in a 5-minute talk, such as the talks given at the annual Graduate Exhibition in the spring.

About the Speaker

Holding a master of science in electrical engineering and a master of fine arts in writing, Michael Alley is a teaching professor of engineering communication at Penn State. He is the author of The Craft of Scientific Presentations (Springer, 2013), which has been translated to Japanese and Chinese. Over the past decade, Alley has taught presentations to engineers and scientists on four continents. Sites include Army Corps of Engineers, Boston Scientific, Google, Harvard Medical School, MIT, Texas Instruments, the University of Oslo, and the University of Illinois.
