Penn State Graduate School Penn State Penn State Graduate School

The View from Kern - October 2016

Welcome to the third issue of the Graduate School's Alumni Newsletter. In this edition of the Newsletter, we showcase two outstanding graduate students seeking to solve societal problems through complex research. Both students, John Beieler and Matthew Shorey, were featured in the Beaver Stadium Pictorial – otherwise known as the football game day magazine – and a special announcement was made during the game on October 22, acknowledging their outstanding research efforts, as well as those of all graduate students at Penn State.

I also want to take the time to acknowledge Joseph (Jay) Kovacs III, a Graduate School alumnus, who was selected as a Penn State Alumni Association Alumni Fellow. The designation is the highest honor bestowed by the Alumni Association and a profile on Jay is included in this issue. Congratulations, Jay!

In other news, on November 29, 2016, the Graduate School at Penn State will participate in #GivingTuesday—a national day to celebrate the power of giving back. Through this celebration of  philanthropy—at our University and beyond—#GivingTuesday at Penn State will be an opportunity for our students, faculty, alumni, parents, friends, and fans to show the world that Penn Staters have heart. And by making a gift to the Graduate School, you can show our current graduate students just how much you believe in them. Give back on #GivingTuesday.

Gifts to the Graduate School provide scholarships and grants for our highest-achieving graduate students and  support internships and other experiential learning opportunities, outreach efforts in the community, participation in workshops, conferences and academic forums, networking venues, travel related to research and professional development, and other activities. Remember that only gifts made on November 29 will count towards our #GivingTuesday grand total!

I also wish to personally thank all of our alumni who submitted Class Notes updates. I encourage you to read their updates and submit your own for future issues of the Newsletter.
