November 2017 - Issue 6
As the end of the year fast approaches, I want to share important updates from the Graduate School. First, I am pleased to announce that William A. Clark has been named associate dean of the Graduate School. As associate dean, Bill will primarily focus on graduate program review and assessment for all of the 302 graduate degree programs representing 196 major fields of study at the University. Bill received his bachelor’s degree from Penn State, and we are happy to welcome him back to the University.
With autumn now upon us, the school year is well underway. In the same vein, our Graduate School Alumni Society (GSAS) has kicked off another school year, connecting with graduate students, alumni and administration to promote the mission of graduate education at Penn State University.
Jason De León, a 2008 doctoral graduate in anthropology, has recently been named to the list of 2017 MacArthur Fellowship recipients. The MacArthur Fellowship, also known as the “genius grant,” is a prestigious award given to those who display exceptional creativity and significant accomplishments in their respective fields. De León is one of 24 winners this year. The other recipients represent a variety of professions, including musicians, writers, community leaders and scientists.
Before concluding his keynote presentation at the Graduate School’s Career Exploration Workshop at Penn State’s University Park campus in October, Roy Schuyler, III shared a piece of advice that is in keeping with the way he has led his own life: “Leave a legacy.”
In addition to these 15 students, there are 69 prior recipients continuing in the University’s graduate degree programs in the Eberly College of Science, College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Education, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Health and Human Development, College of Information Sciences and Technology, and College of the Liberal Arts, as well as the Intercollege Graduate Degree Programs.
Stay in touch with your classmates! All Graduate School alumni are invited to submit your announcements of career achievements, updates, or any other news of general interest that you would like to share.
